The debut teaser for Encanto, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ next animated feature, is full of enchantment. The forthcoming film is set in a mythical Colombian town and follows the Madrigal family, who each have unique abilities such as shapeshifting, plant growth, and super-strength. The home is charmed as well, swaying to the pulse of daily life.

Everyone except Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), who is the only member of her family without any extraordinary abilities. Drama, presumably, ensues, though the first teaser isn’t really clear on what the narrative is about.

However, the film is visually stunning, with the Madrigal’s mansion, in particular, stealing the show with its brilliant colors and unusual construction. Encanto is a musical in the Disney style, with lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the EGOT-winning author of Hamilton.

Encanto will be released in cinemas on November 24th, making it the first big animated picture from Disney not to be distributed directly to Disney Plus since the COVID-19 epidemic shut down theatres. Almost all of the studio’s big animated releases from both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar — including Soul, Luca, and Raya and the Previous Dragon — have been shifted to iD during the last year and a half, including Soul, Luca, and Raya and the Last Dragon — either straight to its streaming service or with concurrent releases in both theaters and on Disney Plus.
