During the nearly five decades that Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan have been married, their relationship has been adored and extensively scrutinized by their fans and admirers. While they have frequently discussed how they met and began dating, they once discussed how Amitabh does not believe in blatantly romantic gestures.
In a conversation with Simi Grewal, Jaya and Amitabh were asked if Amitabh was a romantic. Amitabh said no, and Jaya replied, “Not with me.” When Amitabh gave her a confused look, Jaya laughed and remarked, “I’ve started trouble.”
Amitabh then inquired as to what Simi meant by “romantic,” to which Jaya replied, “buying wine and flowers for your sweetheart.” Jaya then stated, “He’s quite timid. Amitabh interjected, “I’ve never done it.” Jaya said, “Perhaps if he had a girlfriend, he would do it, but I don’t think…”
Simi then asked Jaya if he was ever romantic while she was his girlfriend, to which Jaya replied, “We never spoke.” Upon seeing Simi’s astonished expression, Jaya added, “We scarcely spoke.” Simi glanced at Amitabh with a bewildered expression, and he stated, “It’s such a waste of time.”
Jaya added in the same conversation that she “saw danger” when she first met Amitabh. “When I first met him, I perceived danger,” she stated, shocking Amitabh Bachchan. She stated, “I was afraid because he was the only person I’ve ever known who could dictate things to me, and I allowed him to do so.” She continued, “It’s not like he would dictate things to me, it’s just that even if he said anything softly, I’d do it. I would aim to please him. To want to satisfy people is not something that comes easily or readily to me.”
