Karan Malhotra: Ranbir and Rishi Kapoor’s personalities were as opposed as the North and South Poles -Exclusive

Karan Malhotra

Karan Malhotra holds the rare distinction of having directed films starring both Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. He collaborated with the late Rishi Kapoor on ‘Agneepath,’ and directed Ranbir in ‘Shamshera.’ During an interview with ETimes, he discussed the differences and similarities between father and son. Karan stated, “I believe their acting cultures are very similar. However, their personalities on set are opposite. It’s similar to the North and South Poles.”

Karan elaborated on the differences between late Rishi Kapoor and his son Ranbir, saying, “Chintu’s uncle was a flamboyant, loud, outspoken, and confrontational individual. Ranbir, on the other hand, is the polar opposite of that. Ranbir is a cheerful person. He carries out his masti quietly. He’s both pleased with himself and unconcerned.” Karan reflected on his time working with Rishi Kapoor, saying, “While filming Agneepath, I had numerous fights and arguments with Chintu’s uncle. And I wouldn’t want to forget that entire experience with him for a single second because it means so much to me. That is something I miss. He would always challenge me and strengthen my resolve. Arguing and fighting with him was like arguing and fighting with your parents. Woh Chali bhi date the, dakka Bhi maarte the (He’d curse and push me) and say Pagal ho Gaya hai to (you’ve gone insane). We used to frequently disagree.”

Karan, after pointing out the differences, also mentioned the similarities between the two talented actors. According to him, Ranbir and Chintu’s uncle are “similar” in that they both “submit” to the vision of the film and its director. They will not attempt to sabotage that. That is their strongest suit.” He went on to say that Rishi and Ranbir both gave him exactly what he wanted, and that “They sometimes gave me more than I expected. They were never self-employed. Because both were such big stars, there could have been a lot of drama on set. They were, however, professionals who worked for the film.”
