Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, who married this April 14, are expecting their first child. Ranbir recently said that he had been thinking about becoming a father even before he and Alia got married. He stated that one of the reasons he wanted to start his own family was his age.

While Alia Bhatt turned 29 on March 15 of this year, Ranbir Kapoor will turn 40 on September 28. Because of his age, Ranbir began to wonder if he would be fit enough to play with his children when they became adults.

In a recent interview with Quint, Vaani Kapoor recalled that while she was filming Shamshera with Ranbir, he asked her, ‘when do you think you want to have kids, by what age?’ According to Ranbir, people begin to have these thoughts as they approach their fortieth birthday. You start thinking about things like, “Yaar Mera Baccha Jab 20 Saal Ka Hao, To Main 60 Ka Honda”. Will I be able to participate in sports, do things, or travel?”

Karan Malhotra, the director of Shamshera, also recalled Ranbir telling him two and a half years ago that he wants to have children very soon. To paraphrase the director, “His longing to become a father is immense”. I recall telling him we were expecting a child. ‘Congratulations,’ he said at first. Main bhi banunga bahut jaldi haa, main bhi banunga bahut jaldi haa (I also plan to become a father soon). I’ll do it as well.’ His enthusiasm was out of this world.” Ranbir went on to say that he had this conversation with Karan even before his marriage to Alia.

Alia, who was in London filming her Hollywood debut Heart Of Stone at the time she announced her pregnancy, has now returned to Mumbai. When she arrived last week, Ranbir went to the airport to meet her. He is looking forward to the release of Shamshera, which will be in theaters on July 22.
