Taapsee Pannu is believable as Mithali Raj in this compelling story of the growth of a renowned cricketer

Taapsee Pannu

Taapsee Pannu portrays former cricketer Mithali Raj in Shabaash Mithu, which depicts the narrative of her ascent against adversity in an engaging way.

The trailer for Taapsee Pannu’s Shabaash Mithu is out, and it looks intriguing with its riveting storyline. It tells the story of Mithali Raj, a recently retired cricketer, and her trials and triumphs. Taapsee portrays Mithali, who has a tan, strong batting abilities, and determination written all over her face. Taapsee plays Mithali, the cricketer who changed the game not just in India, but internationally, in the film directed by Srijit Mukherji.

Taapsee in action on the field, striking fours and sixes one after the other, starts the two-minute and 44-second teaser. It quickly shifts to Mithali’s youth, when she is taken off guard when she catches a ball struck by her older brother. When her seniors recognize her aptitude and she starts her training, her other trainees see her as the ‘English medium’ girl. It is heartbreaking to see how she rises above all difficulties and even raises her voice to get team jerseys with their names put on them instead of the male players.

Taapsee had previously praised Mithali, saying, “There are cricketers with records to their names. Certain cricketers have a large fan base. There are those cricketers that may inspire you and make you think that if they can do it, so can you! And then there’s Mithali, who achieved it all in her trademark elegant way while also changing the game of cricket in terms of women’s presence.”

She said, “She will be remembered not just in our nation, but around the world for her commitment to women’s cricket. I was simply too lucky as a fan to be able to see her magnificent 23-year journey on camera, which taught me so much about tenacity and endurance. We will never be able to thank her enough.” Shabash Mithu will be released in theatres on July 15th.
