When Sonam Kapoor stated that just because someone appears to be ‘from the find does not mean they are a good actor: ‘It’s garbage.’

Sonam Kapoor

The seventh season of Koffee with Karan will premiere soon, but Sonam Kapoor will not be returning, based on the trailer. Sonam has appeared in some of the show’s most memorable episodes, causing controversy with her statements that reverberated throughout the industry.

Sonam called herself an “icon” in a 2014 appearance on the controversial chat show, saying it’s “amazing” to be treated like one while still in her twenties. Karan Johar couldn’t help but laugh at her bravado.

When he asked if she was bothered by being recognized for her fashion rather than her acting, she replied, “The biggest movie stars in this world were all fashion icons.” Whether it’s an Audrey Hepburn, a Marilyn Monroe, a Katherine Hepburn, Meena Kumari, Sharmila Tagore, Rekha… They’ve always been fashion icons, setting trends… The masses like me as a regular, normal girl; these are the people who see my films, which is why they do so well. However, the ‘classes’ who see me in Vogue or on Koffee with Karan regard me as a fashion icon. So I believe I am catering to both sides.”

Even if you’re unattractive, people think you’re a talented actress in the industry, Sonam said. Do you know what I mean? I do North Indian roles, but I’m from the JVPD Scheme, so I can play a Bittu from Delhi-6 or a Zoya from Lucknow while also playing an Ayesha or an I Hate Luv Stories… You’re not a good actor just because you look ordinary and act loud. That’s nonsense. Because of the way she looks, many people assume “she’d make a pretty excellent actor.”

She reaffirmed her feelings a moment later after Karan said that he can understand what she was saying because he, too, has never been taken seriously as a filmmaker because of the films he makes. “These so-called art films, why do they have to take not-so-nice-looking people?” she continued. It’s absurd; just because they don’t look good doesn’t mean they’re bad actors.”

Sonam has been largely absent from the film industry since her wedding to businessman Anand Ahuja in 2018. She made a brief appearance in 2020’s AK vs AK and will next be seen in the thriller Blind. She’s expecting her first kid with her husband, Anand.
