The 72nd Berlin International Film Festival has picked Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt. Next year, Gangubai Kathiawadi will make its international debut at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed picture has been selected for screening as part of Berlinale Special, a section of the film festival committed to showcasing exceptional filmmaking. This year’s choices are documentaries shot during the epidemic.

GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI’S STORY
Gangubai Kathiawadi is claimed to be a lady who moved to Mumbai from Gujarat with her boyfriend only to be deceived, sold off, and forced into prostitution. In the middle of the past century, Kathiawadi developed links with various underworld gangs and gained control of some areas of South Mumbai. She became the proprietor of a brothel and is claimed to have worked for the betterment of women and orphans in Mumbai’s Kamathipura red-light district.

The film, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios), is planned to hit theatres on February 18, 2022.
