Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior director Om Raut has stated that the film would not have been possible without the support of lead actors Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan. The film received three nominations for the 68th National Film Awards, which were announced on Friday. Ajay Devgn won the best actor award (which he shared with Suriya), and the film also won best popular film providing wholesome entertainment and best costume.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, directed by Om Raut, starred Ajay and Saif, as well as Kajol and Sharad Kelkar. In the film, Saif portrayed Mughal general Udaybhan Rathod, the nemesis of Maratha subedar Tanaji Malusare (Ajay).

“Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is my labor of love,” Om told News18 in a new interview. Ajay Devgn sir enthusiastically supported the film, not only agreeing to play the lead but also putting in the effort to produce it. I’m thrilled that the film won Best Film for Wholesome Entertainment at the 68th National Awards. I also want to congratulate Ajay sir on his award for Best Actor in the film. Tanhaji in his most authentic form. This would be incomplete without mentioning Saif (Ali Khan) sir, whose support was critical to the success of this film.” He went on to say that the entire cast and crew of the film are pillars of the project and that the award is for every one of them.

Soon after the film’s release in 2020, Saif told journalist Anupama Chopra that his role was “delicious,” but that there was no concept of India before the British arrived, and that period dramas could not be considered history. Many people chastised the actor for his remark.

“I didn’t take a stand for some reason… “Perhaps next time,” Saif added, “I was very excited to play the role because it’s a delicious role.” But when people say this is history, I don’t believe it.

In a statement, Ajay Devgn expressed his gratitude for winning his third National Film Award, saying, “I’m elated to win the Best Actor Award for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior at the 68th National Awards alongside Suriya, who won for Soorarai Potter.” I want to thank everyone, especially my creative team, the audience, and my fans. I also want to thank my parents and the Almighty for their blessings. Congratulations to everyone else who won.”
