Balwinder Safri, a Punjabi singer, has died; Diljit Dosanjh and Guru Randhawa remember him
Balwinder Safri, a Punjabi singer based in the United Kingdom, died on Tuesday, shortly after being released from the hospital. He was 63. The late singer was a Bhangra superstar, with hit songs such as O Chan Mere Makhna, Pao Bhangra, Gal Sun Kuriye, and Nachdinu. Diljit Dosanjh, Guru Randhawa, Neeru Bajwa, and Gurdas Maan, among others, have expressed their condolences on the singer’s death.
According to ANI, the singer was admitted to Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital in April 2022 due to heart problems. After three bypass surgeries, he went into a coma due to brain damage. He was reportedly discharged from the hospital after 86 days and was on his way to recovery, but he died.
A tribute from musician Guru Randhawa on Instagram reads, “We shall appreciate your music and contribution to Punjabi music forever sir. Rest in peace, my friend. Sir Balwinder Safri, Alvida (goodbye).”
Diljit Dosanjh captioned an Instagram photo of Balwinder Safri, “Waheguru (joined hands emojis) Balwinder Safri Ji.” Gurdas Mann also posted a photo of the late singer to his Instagram Stories with the caption, “Safri Saab.”
Neeru Bajwa, Diljit’s Jatt & Juliet co-star, posted a throwback photo of herself with Balwinder on Instagram, along with a heartbreaking note. “Menu Yaad hai Balwinder Ji nu asi window tho dekya si during #beautifulbillo shoot…” she wrote. (I remember how excited we were when Balwinder Ji saw us from the window during the shoot for the song Beautiful Billo.) He came up to greet us and was extremely gracious. They aren’t made in such a manner any longer, that’s for sure. Thank you very much, sir, for your contributions to the Punjabi music industry.
Jazzy B responded in the comments section, “He was such a humble person.” Singer Jassie Gill posted a video to his Instagram Stories featuring himself, Babbal Rai, and Balwinder Safri. He captioned the video with the phrase “Eh Mulakaat Hmesha Yaad huge.” Waheguru Apne Charna vch Niwas Bandhan (I will remember this meeting forever).”
