Further on Dunki

Dunki is a comedy-drama that is inspired by the ‘donkey flight’ method of unlawful immigration. In addition to Shah Rukh and Taapsee, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, Vikram Kochhar, and Anil Grover also appear in the film. Following two consecutive action triumphs in Pathaan and Jawan, this is Shah Rukh’s third and final film of 2023.

Salaar, which starred Prabhas, competed with Dunki at the box office. Salaar has been the box office frontrunner, providing Dunki with formidable competition. A few days ago, Variety reported that Salaar was in the lead with a third-place finish at the worldwide box office, with Dunki following in fourth place during the pre-Christmas weekend. Salaar has amassed ₹402 crore to date, putting it on a stretch of worldwide box office records.

Even at the domestic box office, the debut weekend for Salaar was phenomenal. Thus far in India, the Prashant Neel-directed film has amassed ₹250.34 crore, with Dunki generating ₹124.01 crore.

Dunki evaluation
An excerpt from the film’s review in the Hindustan Times stated, “Dunki is not merely a love story in which he assists her in achieving her aspirations.” It presents a thought-provoking narrative around the substantial topic of unauthorised immigrants from India who take perilous journeys to reach foreign countries, frequently putting their lives at risk in the process. Hirani deserves praise for skillfully interweaving a central love story with the timely concern of unauthorised immigration. “I admired Dunki’s use of a lighthearted tone to convey his point forcefully regarding the reasons why visas are denied to impoverished and non-English speaking Indians in a number of countries.”
